8th Annual Association Challenge - November
3, 2012
Oh-oh! Brandon? No way!!
On November 3, 2012, Winnipeg hosted the
Brandon/Dauphin/Winnipeg Association Challenge at Academy
West Bowling Lanes, Winnipeg’s newest sanctioned tenpin bowling lanes.
Early on, Brandon had warned Winnipeg that the trophy
wasn’t staying in Winnipeg this year. They said they were going to take it
home with them, even if they had to steal it!!
And while they had had a snow storm the night before,
Dauphin did make it in but they were short two bowlers, so Winnipeg loaned them
a couple. And the challenge was on!!
After the first two games including handicap, Dauphin
was leading Winnipeg by 44 pins (did I mention we had loaned them 2 bowlers?),
and Brandon was another 603 pins behind that. But Brandon was determined and in
game 3 they turned up the heat, bowling an outstanding team average of 207.25
for Team 1 and 208.25 for Team 1! Now they were only 322 pins out of first. But
could they do it?
Game 4 saw Dauphin lose their lead to Winnipeg, and
while Brandon was still trailing, they had now closed the gap to 125 pins out of
first.
And in game 5, Brandon Team 2 gave it their all,
bowling an outstanding team average of 210.25!! But was it enough??
While scores were being tallied, the bowlers sat
around and talked and had dinner – Caesar salad, an assortment of pizza, some
very flavorful chicken wings, and of course, an assortment of desserts.
And then finally, the score sheets were all tallied
up. But who had won?
First the Gutter
Ball Guru Award was presented to Jay Doe (Winnipeg), who had quickly stepped
in to help Dauphin fill their team.
The Spare
Change Award was presented to Ian Scott (Dauphin), for having the most
spares – 27 overall.
The Strike It
Rich Award was presented to Wally Matskiw (Brandon) for what else but having
the most strikes – 33 overall.
And then the moment that everyone had been waiting
for. The Association Challenge winner was announced. With a grand total of 7992,
Brandon was told they didn’t have to steal the trophy; they had rightfully won
it! Winnipeg ended up with 7839 and Dauphin 7674. And when I say rightfully won
it, they really did. Scratch, Brandon bowled more than 1000 pins more than
Winnipeg and just under 1500 pins more than Dauphin. I must say, Brandon has
some pretty impressive bowlers – well done!!
A huge “thank you” to Todd Britton and his staff
at Academy West Bowling Lanes. They did a superb job of handling their first
tenpin bowling tournament in their newly sanctioned lanes. Comments from all the
Associations were very positive and I know that Winnipeg looks forward to
holding other tournaments there.
Thanks to Ron and Peter for making announcements
(since my throat was a little sore); Pat and Pam for donating prizes; Dan and
Jay for making up the shortage on the Dauphin lineup; Al Crandall for being on
standby if one of the bowlers wasn’t able to bowl; and of course, to all of
the bowlers who showed up and had a great time.
Winnipeg is already looking forward to next year’s
Association Challenge which will be hosted by Brandon. And yes Brandon, be
forewarned - Winnipeg will be taking
the trophy back home!!

Winnipeg Tenpin Bowling Association
